Why did you pick such a common name, “independent living”?

These are powerful words, reflective of a philosophy. These words point us to "disability and society" and describes our pursuit of self-determination, self-respect, and equal opportunities. These words were chosen by our historic pioneers in the 1970's to describe their struggle and goals. Other groups have adopted our words and twisted the meaning into some forms of institutional care but please don't ever confuse a center for independent living with those models.
