We are the local disability movement in SW PA. We are on a mission to recruit local people who are already a part of the community and who want to work on the barriers that still remain. Please join TRIPIL's Membership and be a part of the solution. Here's what we have come with so far:
Housing
To increase the number of accessible housing units
- Find a local chairperson
- Complete needs assessment to determine housing issues specific to local county
- Identify people with disabilities who currently have issues or are unable to access public housing
- Schedule meetings with executive director of Washington County Housing Authority
- Identify the number of accessible units available within the housing authority
- Identify the number of accessible units within subsidized housing
Accessibility
To remove barriers to access within the community
- Find a local chairperson
- Establish active relationship between local code enforcement officer and local advocates
- Outreach to individuals interested in accessibility issues.
- Identify specific businesses that do not meet ADA guidelines
- Provide businesses with informational packets on accessibility requirements and incentives.
- Create and implement action plan to address and remove curb cut barriers
Voting Rights
To improve accessibility to polling places
- Find a local chairperson
- Identify people for the group
- Increase community involvement
- Conduct accessibility surveys
- Attend public meetings regarding issues
Transportation
To improve the transportation system in Fayette County
- Identify people who currently have issues with transportation.
- Outreach to individuals issues with public transportation.
- Find A Chairperson
- Collaborate with other agencies which might have issues with FACT
- Local carrier involvement to attend meetings
- Attend County Commissioners meeting to discuss FACT
- Confirm status of the person with disabilities subcommittee
Education
To educate parents and students on becoming self-advocates for their education.
- Find a local chairperson.
- Start a Parent Study Group.
- Attend school board meetings in the 5 school districts of Greene County.
- Create a working network between parents and agencies that can help improve their child’s education.
- Educate parents and students about the grievance process
Employment
To improve employment opportunities
- Find a local chairperson
- Identify individuals currently interested in employment
- Outreach to individuals interested in employment
- Obtain available resources for employment related issues
- Establish active participation from OVR Representative at employment meetings
